Government Establishes 5-Member Committee to Investigate May 9 Violence
The federal government has established a cabinet committee to investigate the incidents that occurred on May 9, 2023, during which violent PTI supporters attacked, vandalized, and set fire to public and private property.
On the directive of caretaker Prime Minister Anwarul Haq Kakar, a notification for the formation of a five-member committee was issued. Caretaker Law Minister Ahmed Irfan Aslam will lead the committee, with other members including the ministers of interior, information, and human rights. The committee’s mandate, as per the notification, is to review the events of May 9, 2023.
The committee’s objectives include identifying the masterminds, planners, and facilitators behind the May 9 events, determining the reasons for the day’s mayhem, and holding those responsible accountable. Additionally, the committee is tasked with providing recommendations to prevent such incidents in the future.
The formation of this committee follows the emergence of videos depicting violence perpetrated by PTI leaders and workers on May 9, 2023, providing evidence of the involvement of those accused in the incidents.
