Political Parties Unanimously Reject Postponement of Elections

Various political parties have collectively rejected what they perceive as an ‘unconstitutional’ resolution passed by the Senate, advocating for a delay in the upcoming general elections scheduled for February 8. The resolution cited concerns about the ‘security situation’ and extreme weather conditions in hilly areas.

The parties unequivocally dismissed the non-binding resolution, asserting that any further postponement of the electoral process would violate constitutional norms. In response to a question about the resolution, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, actively engaged in his election campaign in Lahore, affirmed, “the elections will be held on time.”

Bilawal Bhutto outlined challenges in healthcare and employment, expressing his vision for free treatment hospitals and educational institutions. He declared confidence in the victory of the People’s Party. Meanwhile, PPP Senator Sherry Rehman emphasized the party’s unwavering stance against delaying the elections, stating, “We didn’t support the resolution.”

Addressing security concerns, Rehman noted the historical targeting of PPP in terrorism and highlighted that despite tragic events, elections were held as scheduled. She reiterated the party’s commitment to free, fair, and timely polls, emphasizing that a Senate-passed resolution does not carry the weight of law.

Mian Javed Latif, a PML-N leader, expressed strong opposition to the desire to postpone the election through a resolution, stating, “Muslim League-N strongly opposes it. We will not allow the election to be delayed even for a moment. We are standing in front of all kinds of conspiracies.” Latif considered the resolution an insult to the upper house and rejected attempts to pass it through the back door.
